The multiplier is the number of times income rises in response to an initial change in investment; it equals 1/(1−MPC).

The investment multiplier (given by Keynes) explains the relationship between an initial change in investment and the resulting total change in national income. It is defined as the ratio of the change in income to the change in investment: Multiplier (K) = change in Income (ΔY) / change in Investment (ΔI).

The multiplier works because the income created by new investment is spent again by its recipients, becoming income for others, who spend a part of it again, and so on. How much is re-spent each round depends on the Marginal Propensity to Consume (MPC). Therefore the value of the multiplier is K = 1 / (1 − MPC) = 1 / MPS.
