Involuntary unemployment is unemployment of workers willing to work at the going wage but who cannot find jobs because of deficient demand.

Involuntary unemployment is a situation in which persons who are willing and able to work at the prevailing wage rate are unable to find work. Such unemployment is not of the worker's own choice; it arises because there are not enough jobs, mainly due to a deficiency of effective (aggregate) demand in the economy.

This concept is central to Keynesian economics. Keynes argued, against the classical belief in automatic full employment, that an economy can be in equilibrium with involuntary unemployment because aggregate demand is too low to employ the whole labour force. The remedy, according to Keynes, is to raise aggregate demand (for example, through increased government expenditure).
