A centrally planned economy is one where the government/central authority owns the means of production and decides all the central economic problems through a plan, not the market.

A centralised (or centrally) planned economy — also called a socialist or command economy — is an economic system in which the means of production are owned by the government, and the basic economic decisions are taken by a central planning authority rather than by the free market.

Main features:

  1. The central problems — what to produce, how to produce and for whom to produce — are solved by the government's central plan, not by the price mechanism.
  2. The means of production (land, factories, capital) are owned and controlled by the state.
