AP = TP ÷ labour and MP = change in TP; the results are AP = 20, 18, 16 and MP = 20, 16, 12.

Given data:

Units of Labour (L): 1, 2, 3

Total Production (TP): 20, 36, 48

Step 1 — Average Product (AP): AP = Total Product ÷ Units of Labour.

  • At L = 1: AP = 20 ÷ 1 = 20
  • At L = 2: AP = 36 ÷ 2 = 18
  • At L = 3: AP = 48 ÷ 3 = 16

Step 2 — Marginal Product (MP): MP = change in Total Product when one more unit of labour is employed, i.e. MP of nth unit = TP of n units − TP of (n−1) units. (For the first unit, MP = TP of the first unit.)

  • MP of 1st unit = 20 − 0 = 20
  • MP of 2nd unit = 36 − 20 = 16
  • MP of 3rd unit = 48 − 36 = 12

Table of results:

Labour: 1, 2, 3

TP: 20, 36, 48

AP: 20, 18, 16

MP: 20, 16, 12
