Total Utility is the sum of the satisfaction (marginal utilities) from all the units of a commodity consumed.

Utility means the want-satisfying power of a commodity. Total Utility (TU) is the total amount of satisfaction a consumer gets from consuming a given quantity of a commodity during a period of time. It is obtained by adding up the marginal utilities of all the units consumed: TU = MU1 + MU2 + MU3 + ... = sum of the marginal utilities.

Behaviour of total utility (related to the Law of Diminishing Marginal Utility):

  • As the consumer consumes more units, total utility increases, but at a diminishing rate (because marginal utility falls).
  • Total utility becomes maximum when marginal utility becomes zero — this is the point of satiety.
