A higher indifference curve contains more of the goods, and since more is preferred to less, it gives greater satisfaction.

An indifference curve shows combinations of two goods (X and Y) giving the consumer equal satisfaction; an indifference map is a set of such curves, each successively farther from the origin.

Why a higher indifference curve means higher satisfaction:

  1. A higher indifference curve lies farther away from the origin. Because it is farther out, each of its combinations contains a larger quantity of at least one good and no less of the other (generally more of both goods).
  2. The analysis assumes that the consumer is rational and that 'more is preferred to less' (monotonic preferences) — i.e. a larger quantity of goods always yields greater satisfaction.
  3. Therefore any combination on a higher indifference curve gives the consumer more goods and hence greater total satisfaction than any combination on a lower curve. …
