India's exceptional ecological diversity stems from its vast latitudinal and altitudinal range, varied climate zones, and complex topography, producing many distinct ecosystem types within one country — exactly the kind of comparison the chapter itself draws between India and a country like Norway.

India is one of the world's twelve mega-diversity countries. The chapter's own example, in its section on ecological diversity (13.1), states it plainly: "India, for instance, with its deserts, rain forests, mangroves, coral reefs, wetlands, estuaries, and alpine meadows has a greater ecosystem diversity than a Scandinavian country like Norway." Unpacking why India has this range of ecosystems draws on standard geography, beyond what this specific chapter itself details.

The most fundamental reason is geographical variation. India stretches across a wide latitudinal range — from the tropical southern tip to the temperate Himalayas in the north. This alone ensures that different parts of the country receive very different amounts of solar energy, rainfall, and temperature.

Equally important is altitudinal diversity. The Indian landscape rises from sea level to over 8,000 metres in the Himalayas. As you climb, temperature drops and precipitation patterns change, producing entirely new ecological communities at different elevations — this vertical stacking of ecosystems multiplies the number of habitats available.

Topography adds a further layer: a long coastline with estuaries and coral reefs, the river plains of the Ganga and Brahmaputra, the Deccan plateau, the Thar desert, and island ecosystems in the Andaman, Nicobar and Lakshadweep groups each create their own microclimate and soil conditions, fostering specialised plant and animal communities. …
