Biotechnology improves agriculture via GM crops that resist pests/diseases, tolerate stress/herbicides and have better nutrition (Bt cotton, Golden Rice), increasing yield.

Biotechnology, especially genetic engineering, is widely used to improve agriculture by producing genetically modified (transgenic) plants with desirable traits:

  1. Pest resistance: A gene (cry gene) from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis is introduced into crops to make them produce Bt toxin, which kills specific insect pests. Examples: Bt cotton (resists bollworm) and Bt brinjal.
  2. Herbicide tolerance: Crops are made tolerant to weed-killing herbicides so that weeds can be destroyed without harming the crop.
  3. Disease and stress tolerance: Plants are engineered to resist viral, fungal and bacterial diseases and to tolerate drought, cold, heat and salinity.
  4. Improved nutritional quality (biofortification): e.g. Golden Rice, which is enriched with beta-carotene (provitamin-A) to fight vitamin-A deficiency.
  5. Longer shelf life: e.g. the Flavr Savr tomato, which stays fresh longer. …
