Biotechnology raises crop productivity and quality through GM/transgenic crops (pest-, herbicide-, stress-resistant, nutrient-enriched), tissue culture and biofertilizers, cutting the need for chemicals.

Role of biotechnology in agriculture.

  1. Pest-resistant (Bt) crops — the cry gene from Bacillus thuringiensis is inserted so the plant makes a natural insecticidal protein, e.g. Bt cotton, Bt brinjal, reducing insecticide use.
  2. Herbicide- and stress-tolerant crops — GM varieties tolerant to herbicides, drought, cold, salinity and heat, allowing cultivation on marginal land.
  3. Pest/nematode resistance by RNA interference — e.g. tobacco protected from the nematode Meloidogyne incognita using RNAi.
  4. Improved nutritional quality — Golden Rice enriched with pro-vitamin A (β-carotene); biofortified crops.
  5. Better storage/shelf life — e.g. Flavr Savr tomato that ripens slowly.
  6. Tissue culture / micropropagation — rapid production of disease-free, genetically identical, high-yielding plants; production of virus-free plants by meristem culture. …
