Gene therapy treats a hereditary disease by inserting a correct gene into the patient's cells; the classic example is curing ADA-deficiency (SCID).

Meaning. Gene therapy is a collection of methods that allows the correction of a gene defect that has been diagnosed in a person. A normal, functional gene is introduced into the individual's cells and tissues (usually with the help of a vector such as a retrovirus) to replace, repair or compensate for the non-functional defective gene, so that the normal function is restored. If done in body (somatic) cells it corrects only that individual; if done in germ cells it can pass to the next generation.
