Gene therapy corrects a genetic disorder by delivering a healthy copy of a gene into a patient's cells; its first successful clinical use treated ADA deficiency in 1990.

What is gene therapy? Gene therapy is a biotechnological approach to correct a genetic defect diagnosed in a child or embryo, by delivering a normal, functional gene into the individual's cells (or germ cells) to compensate for the defective, non-functional, or missing gene. The idea is to attempt to correct the gene defect either by introducing a normal gene to increase the specific function it enables, or by gene augmentation, so the corrected cells produce the missing product.

First clinical case: The first approved instance of gene therapy was given in 1990, to a 4-year-old girl suffering from adenosine deaminase (ADA) deficiency — a genetic disorder resulting from the deletion/defect of the gene for adenosine deaminase, an enzyme crucial for immune function.
