(i) Biodiversity Hot spots. A biodiversity hot spot is a biogeographic region with an exceptionally high number of species and a high degree of endemism (species found nowhere else) that is also under serious threat of habitat destruction. To qualify, a region must have many endemic species and must have lost much of its original vegetation. Though hot spots together cover a very small part of the Earth's land, they contain a very large share of its plant and animal species, so they are the highest priorities for conservation. In India the hot spots are the Western Ghats–Sri Lanka, the Himalaya, and the Indo-Burma region.
