A water ecosystem = abiotic components (water, light, temperature, dissolved gases and nutrients, pH) + biotic components — producers (phytoplankton, algae, aquatic plants), consumers (zooplankton, fish, etc.) and decomposers (bacteria, fungi).

Meaning. A water (aquatic) ecosystem — such as a pond, lake, river or ocean — is a self-sustaining unit where organisms interact with one another and with their watery physical environment. Its components are of two kinds:

A. Abiotic (non-living) components.

  • Water – the medium of life.
  • Light – penetrates only the upper layers; controls photosynthesis (photic vs aphotic zones).
  • Temperature and pH.
  • Dissolved gases – oxygen (O2O_2) for respiration and carbon dioxide (CO2CO_2) for photosynthesis.
  • Inorganic nutrients / dissolved salts – nitrates, phosphates, carbonates, etc.

B. Biotic (living) components.

  1. Producers (autotrophs): free-floating phytoplankton (e.g. diatoms, Spirogyra, Chlamydomonas, blue-green algae), and rooted/floating hydrophytes (e.g. Hydrilla, Vallisneria, lotus, Wolffia). They trap solar energy and make food, forming the base of the food chain.
  2. Consumers (heterotrophs):
    • Primary consumers – zooplankton and small herbivorous animals that feed on phytoplankton.
    • Secondary consumers – small carnivorous fish and insects that eat zooplankton.
    • Tertiary consumers – large predatory fish, birds, etc.
  3. Decomposers (microconsumers): bacteria and fungi at the bottom that break down dead plants and animals, releasing nutrients back into the water for reuse. …
