An ecological pyramid graphically shows the trophic structure of an ecosystem in terms of number, biomass or energy across the levels; the energy pyramid is always upright.

An ecological (Eltonian) pyramid is a graphical representation of the relationship between the different trophic levels (producer → primary consumer → secondary consumer → …) of an ecosystem. The producers form the base and the successive consumers form the tiers above. There are three types:

  1. Pyramid of Number — shows the number of individuals at each trophic level. It is usually upright (grassland), but can be inverted (e.g. a big tree supporting many herbivores and still more parasites).
  2. Pyramid of Biomass — shows the total dry weight (biomass) at each level. Usually upright on land, but inverted in a pond/sea (small biomass of phytoplankton supports a larger biomass of zooplankton/fish at a given time). …
