Variations arising from mutations during meiotic recombination are random and directionless — they are not guided by the needs of the organism.

The question touches on a fundamental idea in evolutionary biology: the nature of variation. In NCERT’s Class 12 Biology chapter on Evolution, you learn that variations are the raw material on which natural selection acts. But where do these variations come from, and what are their characteristics?

Mutations — changes in DNA — occur spontaneously during DNA replication, including during the crossing-over events of meiosis. These mutations are random. That means they do not occur because an organism “needs” a particular change. A bacterium does not mutate to become antibiotic-resistant because it is exposed to the antibiotic; the mutation happens by chance, and if it confers resistance, that variant survives better in the presence of the drug.

Equally important: mutations are directionless. They do not move toward a predetermined goal. A mutation might make a plant taller or shorter, more drought-tolerant or less — there is no inherent “direction” toward improvement. The environment, through natural selection, gives direction after the variation appears, but the variation itself is blind.

Note

NCERT explicitly states that mutations are random and directionless. It contrasts this with the Lamarckian idea of acquired characters, where changes were thought to be directed by use and disuse. …
