Homologous organs share a common structural plan and ancestry but may differ in function, evidencing divergent evolution.

Concept. Homology refers to the similarity in the basic structure and embryonic origin of organs in different organisms, even though the organs may perform different functions. Such organs are called homologous organs. Homology arises because the organisms inherited the organ from a common ancestor and then adapted it to different uses — this is divergent evolution (adaptive radiation).

Examples.

  • The forelimbs of humans (grasping), whales (swimming), bats (flying) and cheetahs (running) all have the same bone arrangement — humerus, radius-ulna, carpals, metacarpals, phalanges — despite different functions.
