Elephantiasis (filaria) is caused by Wuchereria spread by Culex mosquito; prevent by mosquito control, treat with DEC.

Elephantiasis / Filariasis

  • Causative agent: the filarial (thread-like) worms Wuchereria bancrofti and Wuchereria malayi.
  • Transmission: by the bite of the female Culex mosquito, which carries the microfilariae.
  • Symptoms: the worms live in and block the lymphatic vessels, causing gross swelling of the limbs and genital organs — the affected part becomes thick like an elephant's leg, hence 'elephantiasis'.
  • Prevention: destroy mosquito breeding places (remove stagnant water), use mosquito nets, insecticides and repellents; detect and treat carriers early.
  • Treatment: the drug diethylcarbamazine (DEC / Hetrazan) kills the microfilariae; antibiotics and surgery may relieve secondary infection/swelling. …
