A vaccine is a preparation of weakened/killed germs or antigens that induces protective immunity; e.g. polio vaccine and BCG vaccine.

A vaccine is a biological preparation containing weakened (attenuated), killed (inactivated) microbes, or their toxins/antigens (or antigenic proteins). When a vaccine is introduced into the body (by injection or orally):

  • It does not cause the disease but the immune system recognises the antigen and produces specific antibodies against it.
  • It also generates memory B- and T-cells, so that if the real pathogen enters later, the body responds quickly and strongly, preventing the disease. This is the principle of immunisation (active immunity).
