Typhoid is caused by Salmonella typhi (high fever, gut symptoms); pneumonia by Streptococcus pneumoniae (fever, cough, breathing difficulty).

1. Typhoid:

  • Causal organism: the bacterium Salmonella typhi.
  • Transmission: through contaminated food and water (faecal–oral route).
  • Symptoms: sustained high fever (39–40 °C), weakness, stomach pain, headache, loss of appetite, constipation, and in severe cases intestinal perforation. It can be confirmed by the Widal test. (Mary Mallon — 'Typhoid Mary' — was a famous carrier.)

2. Pneumonia:

  • Causal organism: the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae (and also Haemophilus influenzae).
