Zygote → cleavage → morula → blastocyst → implantation → germ layers → organs (embryo → foetus).

Concept. Embryonic development is the process by which the single-celled zygote grows and differentiates into a multicellular embryo and then a foetus. The main events are:

  1. Cleavage — the zygote undergoes repeated mitotic divisions as it moves down the fallopian tube, forming 2, 4, 8, 16 cells → a solid ball called the morula.
  2. Blastocyst formation — the morula develops a cavity and becomes a blastocyst, with an outer trophoblast and an inner cell mass (which forms the embryo proper).
  3. Implantation — the blastocyst attaches to and embeds in the uterine endometrium (~7th day); the trophoblast helps form the placenta.
  4. Gastrulation / germ layer formation — the inner cell mass differentiates into the three primary germ layers: ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm. …
