The male system is testes + ducts + accessory glands + penis; sperm form in the seminiferous tubules by spermatogenesis (spermatogonia → meiosis → spermatids → sperm). (This is the main option of an OR choice.)

Human male reproductive system. Located in the pelvis, it consists of:

  1. Testes (primary sex organs): a pair of oval testes lie in the scrotum (outside the body, ~2-2.5 °C below body temperature for sperm formation). Each testis has ~250 compartments (testicular lobules), each containing 1-3 coiled seminiferous tubules where sperms are produced. The tubule wall has spermatogenic (germ) cells and nourishing Sertoli cells; between the tubules are Leydig (interstitial) cells that secrete testosterone.
  2. Accessory ducts: rete testis → vasa efferentia → epididymis (sperm mature and are stored) → vas deferens → ejaculatory duct → urethra, which opens through the penis.
  3. Accessory glands: a pair of seminal vesicles, one prostate gland, and a pair of bulbourethral (Cowper's) glands. Their secretions form the seminal plasma that nourishes and activates the sperms (together with sperms = semen).
  4. External genitalia: the penis, the male copulatory organ.

Spermatogenesis (sperm formation). Occurs in the seminiferous tubules at puberty under FSH and LH/testosterone control:

  • Multiplication phase: diploid spermatogonia (2n) divide by mitosis.
  • Growth phase: a spermatogonium grows into a primary spermatocyte (2n).
  • Maturation phase: the primary spermatocyte undergoes meiosis I to form two haploid secondary spermatocytes (n); each undergoes meiosis II to form four haploid spermatids (n). …
