Sectional view of a seminiferous tubule shows layers of spermatogenic cells (spermatogonia → spermatocytes → spermatids → sperms) with Sertoli cells in the wall and Leydig (interstitial) cells between the tubules.

Diagram (description of the labelled sectional/T.S. view):

Each seminiferous tubule is lined on the inside by a germinal epithelium. In the sectional view, drawn from the outer wall towards the central lumen, the following are labelled:

  • Basement membrane / tubule wall (tunica propria) — the outer boundary of the tubule.
  • Spermatogonia — the outermost germ cells (male germ / stem cells), lying against the basement membrane.
  • Primary spermatocytes → Secondary spermatocytes → Spermatids — the successive stages of meiosis, arranged in layers moving inward.
  • Sperms (spermatozoa) — mature sperm with their tails projecting into the central lumen.
  • Sertoli cells (nurse cells) — tall, pyramidal cells extending from the basement membrane to the lumen; they nourish and support the developing sperms. …
