The genetic code is the triplet, universal, degenerate, non-overlapping dictionary that translates mRNA base sequence into a protein's amino-acid sequence (64 codons: 61 sense + 3 stop; AUG = start).

(This is an OR question — the essay on the genetic code is written below.)

Genetic code. The genetic code is the relationship (the 'dictionary') by which the sequence of nucleotide bases (A, U, G, C) in mRNA is translated into the sequence of amino acids in a polypeptide. A group of three consecutive bases forms one codon, and each codon specifies one amino acid.

Salient features / characteristics.

  1. Triplet code — each codon consists of three bases; work by Nirenberg, Khorana and others established this. With 4 bases taken 3 at a time there are 4³ = 64 codons.
  2. Coding capacity — of the 64 codons, 61 code for the 20 amino acids and 3 are stop (nonsense) codons — UAA, UAG, UGA — that terminate translation.
  3. Start codon — AUG acts as the initiation codon and also codes for methionine.
  4. Degenerate (redundant) — most amino acids are coded by more than one codon (e.g. leucine by six codons), yet
  5. Unambiguous & specific — one codon codes for only one amino acid.
  6. Non-overlapping — the code is read codon after codon, no base is shared between adjacent codons. …
