The genetic code is a triplet, universal, non-overlapping, comma-less, degenerate and unambiguous code with defined start and stop codons.

Concept: The genetic code is the relationship between the sequence of nucleotide triplets (codons) in mRNA and the sequence of amino acids in the protein they code for. There are 64 codons in all (4³), coding for 20 amino acids.

Main characteristic features:

  1. Triplet code: each codon consists of three consecutive bases that specify one amino acid.
  2. Degenerate (redundant): most amino acids are coded by more than one codon (e.g. leucine has 6 codons); only Met (AUG) and Trp (UGG) have single codons.
  3. Non-overlapping: the code is read in continuous, non-overlapping triplets — one base is part of only one codon.
  4. Comma-less (continuous): there are no gaps/punctuation between codons; the message is read straight through. …
