Human sex determination is XX (female)/XY (male); the father's sperm (X or Y) decides the child's sex, giving a 1:1 (50%:50%) sex ratio.

Determination sex chromosomal differences xx xy humans
Determination sex chromosomal differences xx xy humans

Sex determination in man is of the XX-XY type. Human beings have 23 pairs (46) chromosomes, of which 22 pairs are autosomes and one pair is the sex chromosomes.

  • Female: has two similar sex chromosomes, XX. She is homogametic and produces only one type of egg, all carrying an X chromosome.
  • Male: has two different sex chromosomes, XY. He is heterogametic and produces two types of sperm in equal numbers — 50% carrying X and 50% carrying Y.

At fertilisation (the described cross diagram):

Mother XX (eggs: all X) x Father XY (sperms: 1/2 X, 1/2 Y)

  • X-egg + X-sperm -> XX = daughter (girl)
  • X-egg + Y-sperm -> XY = son (boy) …
