One gene, three alleles (IAI^A, IBI^B, ii); IAI^A/IBI^B co-dominant, both dominant over ii → blood groups A, B, AB, O.

Concept — multiple alleles. The ABO blood group is a classic example of multiple allelism: a single gene I occurs in three allelic forms in the population, though any individual carries only two.

  • IAI^A → produces surface antigen A
  • IBI^B → produces surface antigen B
  • ii → produces no antigen

Dominance relations. IAI^A and IBI^B are completely dominant over ii, but between themselves they are co-dominant — both are expressed together.

Genotype → phenotype:

Blood group (phenotype)Genotype(s)Antigen on RBC
AIAIAI^A I^A, IAiI^A iA
BIBIBI^B I^B, IBiI^B iB
ABIAIBI^A I^BA and B (co-dominance)
