In codominance both alleles of a heterozygote are expressed fully and simultaneously — e.g. the AB blood group.

Concept: Codominance is a type of inheritance in which two different alleles present together in a heterozygote both express themselves completely and independently, so that the phenotype shows both traits together — there is no dominant–recessive relationship and no blending (unlike incomplete dominance).

Example — ABO blood groups (human):

  • The gene I has three alleles: IAI^A, IBI^B and ii.
  • IAI^A produces antigen A, IBI^B produces antigen B, and ii produces no antigen.
  • IAI^A and IBI^B are codominant to each other.
  • A person with genotype IAIBI^A I^B produces both A and B antigens on the red blood cells and has blood group AB — both alleles are expressed together. …
