Background. Mendel proposed hereditary 'factors' but did not know where they were located. By 1900, when Mendel's work was rediscovered, the behaviour of chromosomes during cell division had been described. Walter Sutton and Theodor Boveri (1902) independently noted a striking parallel between the behaviour of chromosomes and Mendelian factors and united the two ideas into the chromosomal theory of inheritance.
Main points of the theory:
- Hereditary factors (genes) are located on chromosomes.
- Chromosomes, like genes, occur in pairs (homologous pairs) in body cells; one of each pair comes from each parent.
- During meiosis, homologous chromosomes pair (synapse) and then separate (segregate) so that each gamete receives only one chromosome of each pair — this explains Mendel's Law of Segregation.
- Different pairs of chromosomes assort independently of one another during meiosis — this explains Mendel's Law of Independent Assortment.
- At fertilisation, the diploid number is restored, one set from each parent. …
