1 deg alcohols: reduce RCHO (H2/Ni) or hydrolyse RCH2X (aq KOH). Ethanol -> ethane via ethene (dehydration then hydrogenation); ethanol -> ethoxyethane by dehydration at 413 K; ethanol is used as a solvent and fuel.

Two general methods of preparing a primary alcohol:

  1. Reduction of aldehydes: an aldehyde on catalytic hydrogenation (or with LiAlH4) gives a primary alcohol. RCHO + H2 --(Ni)--> RCH2OH e.g. CH3CHO + H2 --(Ni)--> CH3CH2OH
  2. Hydrolysis of primary alkyl halides: a primary alkyl halide when boiled with aqueous alkali gives a primary alcohol. RCH2X + KOH(aq) -> RCH2OH + KX e.g. C2H5Br + KOH(aq) -> C2H5OH + KBr

Conversion of ethanol to ethane:

Step 1 - Dehydration of ethanol to ethene with excess concentrated sulphuric acid at 443 K:

C2H5OH --(conc H2SO4, 443 K)--> CH2=CH2 + H2O

Step 2 - Catalytic hydrogenation of ethene to ethane:

CH2=CH2 + H2 --(Ni)--> CH3-CH3

Conversion of ethanol to ethoxyethane (diethyl ether):

Heating ethanol with concentrated sulphuric acid at 413 K (a lower temperature) causes intermolecular dehydration:

2C2H5OH --(conc H2SO4, 413 K)--> C2H5-O-C2H5 + H2O
