(i) Cannizzaro; (ii) hexamine formation; (iii) cyanohydrin; (iv) Etard reaction to benzaldehyde; (v) aldol to 3-hydroxybutanal.

(i) Benzaldehyde heated with NaOH (Cannizzaro reaction - it has no alpha-hydrogen, so it disproportionates):

2C6H5CHO + NaOH -> C6H5CH2OH + C6H5COONa

(benzyl alcohol + sodium benzoate)

(ii) Formaldehyde with ammonia (forms urotropine / hexamethylenetetramine):

6HCHO + 4NH3 -> (CH2)6N4 + 6H2O

(iii) Acetone with HCN (nucleophilic addition to give the cyanohydrin):

(CH3)2C=O + HCN -> (CH3)2C(OH)CN

(acetone cyanohydrin, 2-hydroxy-2-methylpropanenitrile)

(iv) Toluene oxidised with chromyl chloride, CrO2Cl2 (Etard reaction; a chromium complex forms which on hydrolysis gives the aldehyde):

C6H5CH3 + CrO2Cl2 -> C6H5CH(OCrOHCl2)2 --(H3O+)--> C6H5CHO

(benzaldehyde)
