Use Tollens'/Fehling's to tell the aldehyde (propanal) from the ketone (propanone); use NaHCO3_3 or neutral FeCl3_3 to tell benzoic acid from phenol.

(i) Propanal (CH3_3CH2_2CHO) vs Propanone (CH3_3COCH3_3). The distinguishing feature is that an aldehyde is easily oxidised while a ketone is not.

  • Tollens' test: on warming with ammoniacal AgNO3_3, propanal reduces Ag+^+ to a bright silver mirror; propanone gives no reaction. CH3CH2CHO+2[Ag(NH3)2]++3OH−→CH3CH2COO−+2Ag ⁣↓+4NH3+2H2OCH_3CH_2CHO + 2[Ag(NH_3)_2]^+ + 3OH^- \rightarrow CH_3CH_2COO^- + 2Ag\!\downarrow + 4NH_3 + 2H_2O
  • (Alternatively Fehling's test: propanal gives a red-brown Cu2_2O precipitate; propanone does not.)
  • Note propanone, being a methyl ketone, would give a positive iodoform test whereas propanal does not — another valid distinction.

(ii) Phenol (C6_6H5_5OH) vs Benzoic acid (C6_6H5_5COOH). Benzoic acid is a true carboxylic acid; phenol is only weakly acidic. …
