Tollen's test is a characteristic test for aldehydes (–CHO), based on the aldehyde reducing Ag⁺ (from Tollen's reagent) to metallic silver, seen as a bright silver mirror.

Reagent: Tollen's reagent is freshly prepared ammoniacal silver nitrate solution, i.e. the complex ion [Ag(NH3)2]+OH−[Ag(NH_3)_2]^+OH^-, made by adding aqueous ammonia to silver nitrate solution until the initially formed brown precipitate of AgOH/Ag₂O just dissolves.

Procedure & Observation: When an aldehyde is warmed gently with Tollen's reagent in a clean test tube, the aldehyde is oxidised to the corresponding carboxylate ion, while the silver(I) in the complex is reduced to metallic silver, which deposits as a bright, adherent, mirror-like coating on the inner wall of the test tube — hence it is also called the "silver mirror test".

Reaction (for a general aldehyde RCHO):

RCHO+2[Ag(NH3)2]++3OH−⟶RCOO−+2Ag↓(mirror)+4NH3+2H2ORCHO + 2[Ag(NH_3)_2]^+ + 3OH^- \longrightarrow RCOO^- + 2Ag\downarrow(mirror) + 4NH_3 + 2H_2O
