Glucose and fructose are structural isomers (C6H12O6C_6H_{12}O_6): glucose carries an aldehyde group at C-1 (aldohexose), fructose a keto group at C-2 (ketohexose).

Concept — functional-group isomerism in monosaccharides. Both are six-carbon monosaccharides (hexoses) with the same molecular formula C6H12O6C_6H_{12}O_6, but they differ in the carbonyl group:

Glucose (an aldohexose):

  • The carbonyl is an aldehyde (−CHO-CHO) at carbon C-1.
  • Open-chain structure: CHO−(CHOH)4−CH2OHCHO-(CHOH)_4-CH_2OH.
  • The other five carbons bear −OH-OH/−CH2OH-CH_2OH groups; in the ring form it is a six-membered pyranose.

Fructose (a ketohexose):

  • The carbonyl is a ketone (>C=O>C=O) at carbon C-2.
  • Open-chain structure: CH2OH−CO−(CHOH)3−CH2OHCH_2OH-CO-(CHOH)_3-CH_2OH. …
