(i) hexaammineplatinum(IV) ion; potassium tetracyanidonickelate(II). (ii) complex ion = central metal + ligands via coordinate bonds; coordination number = number of donor atoms directly bonded to the metal.

(i) IUPAC names:

  1. [Pt(NH3)6]^4+: NH3 (ammine) is neutral, so Pt is in the +4 state. Six ammine ligands: hexaammine. As a cation the metal keeps its normal name. Name: hexaammineplatinum(IV) ion.
  2. K2[Ni(CN)4]: two K+ = +2, so the complex ion is 2-. CN- is -1 each; 4 x (-1) = -4, so Ni + (-4) = -2, giving Ni = +2. As an anionic complex the metal takes the -ate suffix (nickelate). Name: potassium tetracyanidonickelate(II).

(ii) Definitions:

(a) Complex ion: an electrically charged species in which a central metal atom or ion is surrounded by (and bonded to) a definite number of ions or neutral molecules (ligands) through coordinate (dative) bonds, e.g. [Cu(NH3)4]^2+. …
