Ligands are lone-pair donors bonded to the central metal; monodentate use 1 donor atom, bidentate 2; the two complexes are hexaaquairon(III) chloride and potassium hexacyanidoferrate(II).

Ligands: In a coordination compound, the ions or neutral molecules bound directly to the central metal atom/ion through coordinate (dative) bonds are called ligands. A ligand must have at least one lone pair of electrons which it donates to the metal (it is a Lewis base).

Denticity:

  • Monodentate (unidentate) ligand: binds the metal through only one donor atom. Examples: Cl−Cl^-, NH3NH_3, H2OH_2O, CN−CN^-, OH−OH^-.
  • Bidentate ligand: has two donor atoms and binds the metal at two positions, forming a chelate ring. Examples: ethylenediamine (enen, H2N-CH2CH2-NH2H_2N\text{-}CH_2CH_2\text{-}NH_2) — binds through two N atoms; oxalate ion (C2O42−C_2O_4^{2-}) — binds through two O atoms.

IUPAC names:

  1. [Fe(H2O)6]Cl3[Fe(H_2O)_6]Cl_3: six neutral aqua ligands, chloride outside; iron oxidation state =+3=+3 ⇒ hexaaquairon(III) chloride. …
