Balanced equation: 2MnO4^- + 5C2O4^2- + 16H+ -> 2Mn2+ + 10CO2 + 8H2O.

Step 1 - Write the two half reactions.

Reduction (Mn goes +7 to +2, gains 5 e-):

MnO4^- + 8H+ + 5e- -> Mn2+ + 4H2O

Oxidation (C goes +3 to +4, each C2O4^2- loses 2 e-):

C2O4^2- -> 2CO2 + 2e-

Step 2 - Equalise electrons.

Multiply the reduction half by 2 (10 e- gained) and the oxidation half by 5 (10 e- lost):

2MnO4^- + 16H+ + 10e- -> 2Mn2+ + 8H2O

5C2O4^2- -> 10CO2 + 10e-

Step 3 - Add the half reactions (electrons cancel): …
