Conductivity kappa = conductance of 1 cm^3 of solution (S cm^-1); molar conductivity lambda-m = kappa x 1000/C (S cm^2 mol^-1). Diluting a solution lowers kappa but raises lambda-m.

Conductivity (specific conductance, kappa):

It is the conductance of a solution placed between two electrodes 1 cm apart with a cross-sectional area of 1 cm^2 (i.e. of 1 cm^3 of solution). Unit: S cm^-1 (or ohm^-1 cm^-1).

Molar conductivity (lambda-m):

It is the conducting power of all the ions produced by dissolving one mole of an electrolyte in solution:

lambda-m = kappa x 1000 / C, where C is concentration in mol L^-1. Unit: S cm^2 mol^-1.

Effect of dilution:

  • Conductivity (kappa) decreases on dilution, because the number of ions present per unit volume decreases. …
