Butane has two distinct H environments, so free-radical monochlorination gives two structural isomers: 1-chlorobutane and 2-chlorobutane.

Concept. In free-radical halogenation a chlorine atom can replace any hydrogen. The number of structural monochloro products equals the number of chemically different (non-equivalent) hydrogen environments in the molecule.

Analysing butane CH3−CH2−CH2−CH3CH_3-CH_2-CH_2-CH_3:

  • The six H on the two terminal carbons (C1 and C4) are all equivalent primary hydrogens.
  • The four H on the middle carbons (C2 and C3) are equivalent secondary hydrogens.
