The relative lowering of vapour pressure of a solution equals the mole fraction of the (non-volatile) solute — Raoult's law.

Concept — relative lowering of vapour pressure (RLVP). When a non-volatile solute is dissolved in a solvent, the vapour pressure of the solvent falls from p∘p^{\circ} (pure solvent) to pp (solution). The lowering is (p∘−p)(p^{\circ}-p), and the relative lowering is this lowering expressed as a fraction of the pure-solvent value:

RLVP=p∘−pp∘.\text{RLVP}=\frac{p^{\circ}-p}{p^{\circ}}.

RLVP is a colligative property — it depends only on the number (mole fraction) of solute particles, not on their nature.
