Colligative properties depend on the number of dissolved particles. Using relative lowering of vapour pressure p∘−pp∘=w2/M2w1/M1\dfrac{p^{\circ}-p}{p^{\circ}} = \dfrac{w_2/M_2}{w_1/M_1} gives M2=w2M1p∘w1(p∘−p)M_2 = \dfrac{w_2 M_1 p^{\circ}}{w_1 (p^{\circ}-p)}.

Colligative property. A property of a dilute solution that depends only on the number of solute particles present and not on their chemical nature is called a colligative property. Examples: relative lowering of vapour pressure, elevation of boiling point, depression of freezing point, osmotic pressure.

Molar mass from relative lowering of vapour pressure. By Raoult's law, for a solution of a non-volatile solute the relative lowering of vapour pressure equals the mole fraction of the solute:

p∘−pp∘=x2=n2n1+n2\dfrac{p^{\circ}-p}{p^{\circ}} = x_2 = \dfrac{n_2}{n_1+n_2}

For a dilute solution n2≪n1n_2 \ll n_1, so …
