Electrophoresis is the migration of charged sol particles toward an electrode in an electric field; dialysis is the removal of small dissolved impurities from a sol through a semipermeable membrane.

(i) Electrophoresis: Colloidal particles carry an electric charge. When an electric field is applied across a sol, the charged particles move towards the oppositely charged electrode — positively charged sols move to the cathode, negatively charged sols to the anode. This directed movement of colloidal particles under an electric field is called electrophoresis, and it establishes the sign of the charge on the particles.
