A solution is a homogeneous mixture; its concentration can be given as mass/volume/mass-by-volume percentages, ppm, mole fraction, molarity, molality or normality.

Definition. A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more chemically non-reacting substances whose composition can be varied within certain limits. The component present in larger amount is the solvent; the other(s) are the solute(s).

Ways of expressing concentration.

  1. Mass percentage (w/w): mass of solutemass of solution×100\dfrac{\text{mass of solute}}{\text{mass of solution}}\times100.
  2. Volume percentage (v/v): volume of solutevolume of solution×100\dfrac{\text{volume of solute}}{\text{volume of solution}}\times100.
  3. Mass–volume percentage (w/v): mass of solutevolume of solution (mL)×100\dfrac{\text{mass of solute}}{\text{volume of solution (mL)}}\times100.
  4. Parts per million (ppm): mass of solutemass of solution×106\dfrac{\text{mass of solute}}{\text{mass of solution}}\times10^6 (for very dilute solutions).
  5. Mole fraction (xx): moles of componenttotal moles\dfrac{\text{moles of component}}{\text{total moles}}.
  6. Molarity (MM): moles of solute per litre of solution, M=nV(L)M=\dfrac{n}{V(\text{L})}. …
