The differential equation is y y′′=(y′)2y\,y''=(y')^2.

Concept. A family with nn arbitrary constants gives an nn-th order differential equation; eliminate the constants by differentiation.

Why this method. y=aebx+5y=ae^{bx+5} has two constants a,ba,b, so we differentiate and eliminate both.

Working.

y=aebx+5 ⇒ dydx=ab ebx+5=by.y=ae^{bx+5}\ \Rightarrow\ \frac{dy}{dx}=ab\,e^{bx+5}=by.

So b=1ydydxb=\dfrac{1}{y}\dfrac{dy}{dx}. Differentiating y′=byy'=by again: …
