Bohr proposed non-radiating quantised orbits and quantum jumps, curing Rutherford's problems of an unstable, continuously-radiating atom.

(This is the main alternative of an internal-choice (OR) question.)

Bohr's postulates for the hydrogen atom.

  1. Stationary orbits. An electron revolves around the nucleus only in certain permitted circular orbits, called stationary orbits, and while in these orbits it does not radiate energy — even though it is accelerating.
  2. Quantisation of angular momentum. Only those orbits are allowed in which the electron's angular momentum is an integral multiple of h2π\dfrac{h}{2\pi}: mvr=nh2π,n=1,2,3,…mvr = \frac{nh}{2\pi}, \quad n = 1,2,3,\dots
  3. Quantum jumps (frequency condition). Energy is emitted or absorbed only when an electron jumps from one stationary orbit to another. The frequency of the radiation is given by hν=Ei−Ef.h\nu = E_i - E_f.

How Bohr removed Rutherford's drawbacks.

  • Instability problem: According to classical theory (Rutherford's model), an orbiting (accelerating) electron must continuously radiate energy, spiral inward and collapse into the nucleus — the atom could not be stable. Bohr's first postulate (non-radiating stationary orbits) solved this: in an allowed orbit the electron does not radiate, so the atom is stable. …
