Maxwell's displacement current Id=ε0 dΦE/dtI_d=\varepsilon_0\,d\Phi_E/dt keeps current continuous through a capacitor and makes a changing electric field a source of magnetic field; for a capacitor it equals the conduction current and is in phase with it (phase difference 00).

Significance of displacement current.

  • Ampere's original law fails for a charging capacitor — no conduction current flows between the plates, yet a magnetic field exists there. Maxwell fixed this by adding the displacement current Id=ε0dΦEdt,I_d=\varepsilon_0\frac{d\Phi_E}{dt}, which flows wherever the electric flux ΦE\Phi_E changes with time.
  • It restores the continuity of current: the conduction current in the wire is exactly continued as displacement current in the gap.
  • It shows that a time-varying electric field produces a magnetic field, symmetric to Faraday's law — this symmetry is the very basis of electromagnetic waves.

Phase difference. For a capacitor of plate area AA, E=qε0AE=\dfrac{q}{\varepsilon_0 A}, so …
