The basic accounting equation is Assets = Liabilities + Capital — everything a firm owns is claimed either by outsiders (liabilities) or by the owner (capital). It flows from the dual aspect concept and always stays balanced.

Meaning. A business acquires resources (assets) using funds provided by outsiders (liabilities) and by the proprietor (capital). Because the resources equal the claims against them, the two sides are always equal:
