Chlorophyll a at the reaction centre is the only pigment that directly converts absorbed light energy into chemical energy; all other pigments merely feed energy to it.

Within each photosystem the pigments are organised into a light harvesting complex, or antenna, made of hundreds of pigment molecules bound to proteins. Except for one chlorophyll a molecule, every pigment in this antenna — the rest of the chlorophyll a, all of chlorophyll b, the xanthophylls and the carotenoids — functions purely to absorb light of various wavelengths and pass that energy inward toward the centre of the complex.

The one chlorophyll a molecule that is left out of the antenna forms the reaction centre. In Photosystem I this reaction centre chlorophyll a has an absorption peak at 700 nanometres and is called P700; in Photosystem II it absorbs maximally at 680 nanometres and is called P680. When the funnelled energy reaches this reaction centre chlorophyll, it becomes excited and its electron actually leaves the molecule to enter the electron transport chain — this is the step where light energy is genuinely transformed into chemical (electron/redox) energy, eventually captured as ATP and NADPH.

Important

Accessory pigments (chlorophyll b, xanthophylls, carotenoids) are essential for efficient photosynthesis — they widen the usable range of light wavelengths and protect chlorophyll a from photo-oxidation — but they never themselves perform the energy conversion.

✓Final answer

The correct option is (A) Chlorophyll a — specifically the reaction-centre chlorophyll a molecule of each photosystem.
