The prothallus is the free-living gametophyte of a pteridophyte, not a sporophytic or pre-thallus structure.

In pteridophytes, the dominant, conspicuous plant -- with true roots, stem and leaves -- is the sporophyte. Its sporangia release haploid spores by meiosis, and when a spore germinates it grows into a small, thalloid, photosynthetic, multicellular structure called the prothallus. This prothallus is the gametophyte generation: it bears the antheridia and archegonia, and it needs cool, damp, shady conditions and a film of water so that the motile antherozoids can swim to the egg inside the archegonium.
