Cash Flow Statement is prepared to explain the reasons for the change in cash balance during the year.

Among the financial statements, each serves a different analytical purpose: the Profit and Loss A/c measures profitability (income vs expenses) for the period on an accrual basis, and the Balance Sheet shows the financial position (assets, liabilities, capital) at a point in time. Neither of these, on its own, explains WHY the actual cash balance went up or down during the year — a profitable company can still see its cash fall (e.g. due to large purchases of fixed assets or heavy repayment of loans), and vice-versa.
