A cash flow statement is prepared to reveal where cash came from, where it went, and to help judge the firm's cash-generating and debt-paying capacity.

Two objectives of preparing a Cash Flow Statement:

  1. To ascertain the sources and uses (applications) of cash during an accounting period: The statement classifies all cash inflows and outflows under Operating, Investing, and Financing activities, giving a clear picture of how the business generated cash and how it was spent — information not directly visible from the Balance Sheet or Statement of Profit and Loss alone.

  2. To help assess the cash-generating ability and short-term financial planning of the business: Management, investors, and creditors use this information to evaluate whether the business generates enough cash from its core operations to meet its obligations (loan repayments, interest, dividend, day-to-day expenses), and to plan the timing and amount of cash needed in the near future.
